About the course
Course period: 20 February – 21 March 2025 (7.5 credits) or 20 April 2025 (15 credits)
Application deadline: 13 January 2025
Overview
This course covers the two central dimensions of qualitative methods – data generation and data analysis, with a focus on several basic qualitative techniques or approaches, which cover the pre-registered participants’ areas of interest according to the survey. These are primarily:
- Interviews
- Ethnography and observations
- Document and text analysis
- Discourse analysis
To meet the demands of advanced study and research this course emphasizes data analysis and particular topics will be addressed with regard to each methodological approach rather than re-presenting the general dimensions of the approaches which we assume the students have from undergraduate and Masters level methodology courses.
The general structure of the course consists of an introduction, five substantive units, and an examination. Each substantive unit consists of a one-hour ”orientation” discussion-lecture by the teacher for that unit, followed by a seminar discussion of a part of the readings for the unit. The course also include a series of four workshops, in which designated students will have the opportunity to present their empirical data or research design / data generation plans that are in line with the methodology of that unit. This data will then be subject to a joint analysis. This means that students will choose which unit workshop they wish to present their empirical data or data generation plans at. A reading list and final schedule will be sent out as soon as all the teachers have made their final selections.
